This is a topic that I had struggled with for the first years in my wedding photography business. I thought that I could do it all! Sometimes it is hard to let go of responsibility especially in the wedding business. We creatives are usually very picky and want to do everything ourselves thinking that no one can do it as well as we can! Well that did not last for long! I realized then that I needed an Assistant!
It is totally experience and maturity that comes with time. I believe that to be in all walks of life! When I started shooting weddings, I had my husband there to carry my bags and support me. I never really allowed him to do more than that. Over time as I would face lots of stress on a wedding day, I came to the point of asking for his help. It was a game changer for me and for him. He slowly found his place on a wedding day and it was wonderful to see him grow.
Fast forward to today, he now is my second shooter, he also runs the timeline, he sets up the shots for me, he still carries the bags! YAY! Over the years he transitioned from assistant to actually becoming the great second shooter that he is and he feels such fulfillment in what he does.
The greatest thing that resulted from his taking on more responsibility was that I was able to grow in my creativity and ultimately became a better photographer.
My advice is do not think you can do it all, and let go of things. Hire an Assistant!! You will surely never regret it!
